Wine & Roses Quarter Horse Show

IMG_5960

This weekend was show time!! My 2nd horse show post partum. I still feel wobbly up on top of that big guy, but I’m definitely getting stronger.

We competed in Showmanship and Hunter Under Saddle. We did terribly at showmanship (pictured above), but we took circuit champion in hunter under saddle woo woo!!!

We took this adorable good luck charm 🙂

IMG_5970

She pretty much slept the entire time…

IMG_5994

This horse show was split/combined. So each class that I was in had two judges. Each judge choses their placings separately. What that also means is that I only had to show 2 out of the 4 days since we don’t compete in the western events.

A typical horse show morning goes very similar to an average army day:

5:30 – Alarm goes off, shower, pull hair into a bun and makeup on.

6:00 – Get Harper up (kind of), feed/change/etc.

6:30 – Coffee in cup, go!

8:00 – Arrive at horse show, practice showmanship pattern with trainer

9:00 – Show starts, wait

9:30 – wait some more

10:00 – SHOW!

English usually follows the showmanship classes

On a typical day I usually leave the show at 1:00 or 2:00 and head home for lunch and a well deserved beer!

Harper throws a wrench into the mix, depending on her schedule. So we had to be flexible.

My mom carts around the stroller and hangs out with her while I show.

We’re looking forward to the day that she can ride. But enjoying the time we get to hold and cuddle her.

Army Paisley – Her Life Now

Long time no see… So over the last year I got a bunch of emails from soldiers who were getting ready to go to MIBOLC. They asked a lot of questions and also let me know how helpful this blog was. Happy to hear…. but I failed to respond because I was busy creating and then taking care of this ball of joy…

Image

Not sure if you all knew that I was pregnant, but now you do.

Image

Harper – born June 24th, 2013 🙂

Image

To say the least, it’s been crazy over here. She’s beautiful, wonderful, happy and smells like Heaven.

Image

I’ll start posting different things about being a mom because that is now a new component to the life of Army Paisley.

Speaking of… I got promoted. I’m now a First Lieutenant. Nothing really has changed, but I just can’t mess up as much. I’ve been working on my OER for the past few weeks. That stuff is so fun. Not. It’s hard to remember all that you’ve done in the past year. Especially when you’re only at drill two days a month. Oh yeah and then add a pregnancy and a baby in the mix… Forget about it!

As for running, that has been very limited these days. If you’ve ever tried to run with a stroller you know what I mean. It’s just not the same. Baby starts crying and then you have to deal with that. Your 3 mile run just turned into 2 hours. I’m good. But, I am totally back at CrossFit. I’m pretty much sore all the time because of it. But it’s the best feeling. Well that, and just not being pregnant any more. Pregnancy blows.

Lastly… I’m also back at my civilian job. They are allowing me to exclusively work from home which is totally awesome. I’m constantly surprised at how lucky I truly am. I’m using my mom’s camera these days so I’ll start snapping more pictures of my life. I don’t know that it’s more interesting… just different.

Keep sending me questions via email, I love hearing from all of you.

Foodie!!

Happy Monday!

How was your weekend? Mine was fitness and errand-filled, per-usual!

Saturday was a catch up day. Our fridge looked very, very sad. And I needed to get out and run after being cooped up in an airplane all day on Friday. I got up and ran a quick 2 miles. And then hopped in the car to make it to the 11am yoga class.

20130126-145445.jpg

After yoga I headed straight to the Trader of the Joes. And FILLED UP MY CART. Nothing was left behind. There is really nothing worse than opening your fridge on a Saturday morning to find a dallop of almond butter left and your only option being toast. womp. womp.

I fixed that, quickly. We won’t be hungry for at least a week…

20130126-145452.jpg

Amidst eating, unpacking and cleaning… Annie killed her lamb chop toy. She’s getting better at tearing apart her toys now that she’s getting older. I get to follow her around and pick up all the “fluff” that she tears out of her victims. One toy destroyed means one less slipper eaten! 🙂

20130126-145457.jpg

Annie got invited to a play date at the dog park. Our friends take their dog to this park on a weekly basis. So we joined in the fun! There were so many dogs. Annie is very much the under dog. She never instigates fights, so it was really fun watching her make friends.

20130128-122505.jpg

We didn’t hear a peep from miss Annie for the rest of the night. She plopped herself on the couch and didn’t move until the next morning. I’d say she was a bit worn out from her park play date.

20130128-122512.jpg

Justin and I made dinner Saturday night. He took charge of the tri-tip and I took over the sweet potatoes and rice. This was my first time cooking sweet potatoes without the foil. It was very much a success. The bottom of my oven is kind of a mess, but oh well.

20130128-122516.jpg

All I did was scrub the outside of the potatoes under water and stick them in the oven at 400 degrees for 1 hour. Oh! But don’t forget to poke the potatoes with a fork a few times or else they’ll “explode”… 🙂

I’m planning on participating in Gina’s Winter Shape Up… over at Fitnessista.com. Sounds VERY fun and sweet prizes are involved! Check it out…

Hope you all have a wonderful week!

Shark Weekend

A day in the life of Army Paisley… Civilian style:

My days immediately start with a shower and then a big breakfast.

20120813-183507.jpg

This particular morning I couldn’t make up my mind between salmon and almond butter… so I had both. I also have a cup of coffee. I never finish it, but it’s next to me while I’m getting ready.

I be-bop to music while I put my make up on. I set two alarms for after I’m already awake. One for 7:45am as a reminder “you have 15 minutes before you need to leave the house.” And then another at 8:00am “You need to leave, like NOW!” It ensures that I get to work in time. There have been so many mornings when I look at the clock and think, “CRAP! I’m already 5 minutes late to work!!! AHHH!!” I hate those mornings so I choose not to re-live them.

Then I get to work by about 8:15am. Check my email, chat with my co-workers and then dive into my plan for the day.

These days my plan in literally all mapped out for me…

20120813-183513.jpg

At some point I stop for lunch. Rarely do I eat out, unless I’m riding with a manager. So I bring my own lunch. It’s usually something really simple that I threw together that morning. This day was mixed lettuce with lunch meat, leftover chicken and goddess dressing.

20120813-183525.jpg

I also stop for a drink around 3pm. My typical choice is a Starbucks tea, but this day it was a cherry limeade slurpee. I’m not usually a slurpee fan, but I made a big exception for this glorious flavor!

20120813-183532.jpg

Later I’ll snack on something before heading back to the office around 4pm. Strawberries or coconut flakes or zuchinni or trail mix.

20120813-183543.jpg

And on the days that I’m struggling… a cake pop and iced coconut coffee will do the trick!

20120813-183551.jpg

Between 5:30 and 6:30 I leave the office and head straight to CrossFit. I change at the gym and hang out with my “box friends” until class starts. Or I catch up on blog reading, facebook or phone calls.

By 8pm I’m on my way home to make dinner, shower and go to bed.

But on Friday nights… It’s a little different…

Last Friday I finally made it out for the night.

20120813-183607.jpg

I met up with my “box friends” at Rock Bottom… a brewery in Campbell with delicious beers!

20120813-183620.jpg

I had two of the White Ale’s. Yum!

Saturday

Justin and I made a day trip to Monterey, CA. It was pretty toasty here in San Jose… so the sub 60 degree weather by the water was perfection!

20120813-183629.jpg

I sported BOTH sweaters. I’m kind of a wuss.

20120813-183640.jpg

20120813-183647.jpg

Of course we found ourselves at the Monterey wine tasting room.

20120813-183653.jpg

I was impressed by everything at “A Taste of Monterey” EXCEPT for their wine. No thanks… I’ll just pay for the tasting. No bottle or glass for you two? No, just the tasting, thanks. Blah. Call me a wine snob. I don’t care.

20120813-183711.jpg

But the view at the tasting bar was spectacular! Yes please!

20120813-183718.jpg

20120813-183725.jpg

Justin and I took a very long time deciding if we wanted to spend the $35 each to go to the Aquarium. I knew that if I didn’t go, I would have been disappointed. So we spent the money. Would I have done it again? No. But I would have regretted it had I chosen to pass.

20120813-183801.jpg

No doubt, the display was amazing. Just a little too many people for my viewing pleasure… if you know what I mean.

20120813-183809.jpg

The sharks… so cool!! My favorite was the hammerhead!!

20120813-183829.jpg

I love all the schools of fish swimming together. It always looks fake to me. Like they’re in a trance or something.

20120813-183837.jpg

And uh, giant turtles!?! Hello adorable!

20120813-183845.jpg

It was so much fun. But simply hanging out with Justin was the most fun.

20120813-183854.jpg

For the fellow long distance-ers out there… I feel your pain.

But thank God for the weekend. Cheers.

XO

Wine Lately

20120802-070803.jpg

Hi guys!! I’m going to have to do some SERIOUS catching up…

So last weekend, not the one we just had (I know), but the one before… it was my birthday!!

I spent it with two of my favorite people: Justing and Nadine.

20120802-070816.jpg

We went wine tasting!!

20120802-070836.jpg

I joined two wine clubs. I know, livin’ large… right! And it was absolutely perfect. I won’t have to buy wine for a few months now. Wine for dinner? You got it!

Justin made me these ridiculously cute wine glasses for my birthday with my initials on them. I left them at his house… but I’ll show them to you soon. He’s so creative.

Monday after work my mom and dad took me out to dinner at my favorite Sacramento spot… Paesano’s!!

20120802-070844.jpg

We split a pitcher of sangria, bruchetta and pizza. Yum! I was happy to see them.

Historically I’m usually away at training for the Army on my birthday. This was the first birthday in four years that I was in California. Thank goodness!!

And then Monday morning it was back to work!

20120802-070849.jpg

I’m ok with that. I posted a few birthday cards at my office. That one talks to me. It tells me that drinking three gallons of wine is perfectly normal. It’s my favorite card, obviously.

20120802-070854.jpg

Eats Lately…

I’ve been obsessed with smoked salmon on top of cream cheese and toast. Holy delicious! It’s a perfect combo of protein and carbs for breakfast.

20120802-070905.jpg

I also snagged a bag of chia seeds at TJ’s… I’ve yet to find something that I really like that involves these weird little seeds… but we’re getting there. I’m thinking almond butter, banana wrap with some chia sprinkled in there… we’ll see.

20120802-070910.jpg

I’m also back on a vitamin kick. These are the GNC Active Women’s vitamins. For whatever reason they keep me from feeling hungry all. day. long. HUGE fan… I can only take a few at a time and typcially forget to take them all by the end of the day. But I’m getting better. I know that vitamins are really important to take… so we’re getting there.

20120802-070915.jpg

CrossFit…

Since I barely have time to eat, I’ve only been doing CrossFit lately. I pack my gym bag every night and then head straight to the gym after work. I usually make it to the 7pm class which I’m thankful that my gym offers. Otherwise I’d be out of luck on the workout end. Todays workout was a toughie (when isn’t it?):

4 Rounds:

  • 20 ball slams (16 lb ball)
  • 20 crunches with the ball
  • 20 diamond push ups on the ball
  • run to the fence and back, with the ball

I finished in 14ish minutes. I’m getting back into the swing of things with CrossFit. It feels great to be back. The push ups were the hardest part for me. I had to break them up in sets of 5 to get them all done. And even go on my knees — yikes!! But my arms were still screaming despite my “modification”.

When I got home I cooked up a chicken apple sausage, protein shake and a large glass of wine.

Floors are mopped and vacuumed, counters are clean and sanitized… Now it’s time for some Grey’s Anatomy.

How was your weekend? Done any killer workouts lately? Ever get on cleaning sprees late at night?

Business. It happens.

20120726-202557.jpg

Life got CRAZY all of a sudden.

And I’ve only had time to snap 4 pictures in the last 4 day. Who am I!?!?

20120726-202603.jpg

And I’ve been wearing heels for 4 days straight… and this is what happens. Clearly I’m an amateur.

20120726-202637.jpg

And then I realize that I’ve been working so hard that I need a large glass of this.

20120726-202655.jpg

So this is what it feels like to have a tough, challenging, rewarding, FUN job!

Huh. Weird.

A few weeks ago I got a new job working for a sales company. It was only a small pay increase, but something that I’ve wanted for many years now. I’ll be working more hours that I was before, but I’ll be doing something that I enjoy. I’ll also have a lot more control over how much money I can/will make. Basically, if I work hard — and I’m good at my job, my paycheck will reflect that.

I’m stoked.

Now I just need to find some good walking high heels… any suggestions? I have a pair of Nine West’s… but I can’t wear them every day. Oh and here’s a tid-bit, feet swell when you walk… and then your shoes are TOO SMALL —- OUCH! I’ll be making a fairly large shoe investment this weekend. Icing/soaking my feet every night is not an ideal situation.

Thoughts from this week:

  1. CrossFit rocks. I’m a better person with it in my life. I’m happier, more focused and motivated. It’s good stuff.
  2. Really looking forward to Friday night… Justin is taking me to see Brad Paisley for my birthday!!
  3. Why is Costco so much fun? I’m in love with that store. Still. I got 80 keurig pods for $25. What!
  4. Bubble baths are sometimes a necessity — until you can’t stand them anymore. The sweat is getting into your eyes — then you know it’s time to get out before you overheat.
  5. Rocking out to Christian music in the morning while you put on your make up is quite possibly the BEST way to start out the day.
  6. Convincing your boss to buy an office keurig may be the best way to spend a Wednesday afternoon.
  7. When you burn chicken apple sausage, slather it in avocado — you’ll never know the difference. Truth.
  8. Busy people forget to eat. Swear. And I always thought that was an anorexic chick excuse. She’s not lying.
  9. Showing up to work 30 minutes late to your first day on the job won’t get you fired. Unless you show up in your PJ’s — I can’t help you there. True story, I was 30 minutes late to my first day. Tragedy. But I was dressed appropriately. Win.
  10. I’m STOKED to have weekends off. And work 9-5ish. Never take a job where you have to work weekends – if you don’t have to, that is. It pretty much sucks. Like the worst.

Disneyland Extravaganza!

Hi Friends!!

I’ve been on vacation for a few days, can’t wait to tell you all about it!

Thursday/Friday:

Started at the ridiculously early hour of 3:45am. Coffee was a necessity. As was a great playlist filled with 90s, Jack Black and top 40.

20120724-101124.jpg

20120724-101132.jpg

We didn’t hit any traffic (Hallelujah!) and made it to Disneyland a little after 10am. Parking was a piece of cake (except for the insane $15!!) and we walked a short 1/2 mile to the park. I was like a little kid — STOKED OUT OF MY MIND to be there!!

20120724-101155.jpg

It’s seriously the happiest place on earth. I didn’t even care that there were long lines, or children screaming — I was at Disneyland!

A few years ago, Justin refused to go on roller coasters. And then I took him to Six Flags Marine World — and his world was changed.

Now, he’s a roller coaster junkie. His favorite ride was California Screaming. If you ask him to describe it, he says: “The one that goes upside down.” I think we went on that one about 4 times. It helped that the line moved particularly fast. I think the most we waited was 20 minutes.

He had quite the hair-do after that ride… 🙂

20120724-101218.jpg

Justin has this weird talent. He’s good at everything. To include carnival games. He won this horse “Bullseye” from Toy Story… What a guy!

20120724-101235.jpg

We spent equal amounts of time at Disneyland and the California Adventure side. I was excited to ride Space Mountain for the first time. Turns out, it was also Justin’s first time!!

20120724-101242.jpg

We ended up riding it twice. So. Much. Fun.

20120724-101229.jpg

I was strangling Bullseye.

Although CA Adventure was a blast, I had a special love for Disneyland. Maybe because it’s a true classic — fond memories from when I first came to Disneyland as a little girl.

20120724-101252.jpg

I fulfilled my Mom’s request of riding the Peter Pan ride. It’s absolutely adorable. A MUST. Although I didn’t ride all the kiddie rides, I did do a few of them — and I was happy I did. I think that when you go to Disneyland, it’s okay to be immature —  or ‘young at heart’. It’s part of the experience.

20120724-101321.jpg

We got a 3-day hopper pass, but only ended up spending 2 days at the park. But, I assure you — we got ALL our money’s worth. We were exhausted by then end of each day. So much walking and standing. We took every opportunity to rest in the shade. Me, personally, I’m a very energetic “I wanna see it all” kind of person. And that’s what we did. So you can imagine how tired Justin felt by about 6pm.

20120724-101313.jpg

To keep us bubbly and excited to tackle the park — Starbucks was a must. I got a BIG iced coffee with a few pumps of coconut syrup. Holy-yum!

20120724-101332.jpg

We also enjoyed other snacks like soft-serve ice cream cones, popcorn, icee’s, and a clam chowder bread bowl. I came prepared with sandwich fixings, larabars, bananas, trail mix, water with propel packs and other snacks to keep us fueled throughout the day.

I didn’t see too many characters, but I did see Minnie!! She’s so darn cute!

20120724-101340.jpg

On the second day, Justin and I took a more relaxed approach. We had a few rides left that we wanted to ride, but also wanted to take in more sights/experiences of Disneyland.

So we rode the big ship while we waited for our Fast Pass time.

20120724-101350.jpg

Friday night we stayed for the Disney Fantasmic show as well as the World of Color light/water show — a MUST see!!

20120724-101358.jpg

I was amazed at how beautiful the water show was. Incredible.

We had an amazing two days, but were very tired and ready for a relaxing weekend afterwards. Instead of going the full 3 days, we packed it all into 2 and headed to the beach on Saturday morning. A wise choice considering we both had work on Monday and needed to re-coup after 24 hours of Disneyland!

My favorites: Indiana Jones ride, California Screaming, the white water rafting ride, Space Mountain and Splash Mountain. Also… the Pixar parade (Toy Story, Monsters Inc, and Bugs Life) and the Disney Parade. I was smiling the entire time I watched the parade — be-bopping to the music. I absolutely loved it.

I’m so excited to come back to Disneyland again. Now that I’ve experienced it as an adult, I’ll definitely be back sooner. It’s such a magical place — no matter how old you are.

Writing, Planning, Running

Hey guys!! How was your weekend?? Mine was great! To help start your weekend with a ‘feel good’ story, read about Jenna’s book signing.

I dream of one day writing a book. I was borderline tears reading through her post. It’s exciting to read about other’s success.

On to another kind of success… I’ve been planning for marathon training! It quickly snuck up on me… Nike Women’s Marathon is October 14th!! So exciting! Today I bought a whiteboard calendar in order to help me map out all my runs. I used Tina’s marathon training guide. I’m trying something different than I used to use for my half marathons. We’ll see how it goes. But I like that it’s less running which will allow for more CrossFit.

When I first start planning a training program, I have to physically write it all down in my paper planner.
image

After that I add it to my google calendar. That way the reminders will pop up on my phone. For this training, I asked Justin to join me on his bike for the longer runs. I think it will help to have a buddy… Besides carrying my water and Gu for me. 😉

With all this planning and training, I’m starting to clean up my eats!

Last Night:

I did a fridge/pantry sweep and chopped up the rest of the sweet potatoes and threw them in the oven.

image

With some Coconut Oil, garlic and pepper. Oh how I’ve MISSED coconut oil!!!

image

I also used the can of Mole that I had bought back in Arizona — and made a pot of Chicken Mole. Holy-Mole-YUM.

image

The Mole remained un-used because I could never get the darn top off!! I got too frustrated and just stabbed it. A little aggressive… but hey, it worked, right??

image

After my “Run 5 Miles” calendar alarm went off… I decided to put it in gear. And I ran the full 5. I think I might just be getting over this non-running rut I’ve been in.

And then the green smoothie was born….

image

Frozen banana, frozen kale, coconut milk, ground flax seed and protein powder.

I spent the rest of the evening enjoying a few episodes of Grey’s anatomy, laundry, foam rolling and a glass of Riesling.

image

What races do you have planned this summer?

I’m doing the NWM, but thinking of adding another 1/2 Marathon into the mix.
