Shattered

My job is really cool. Everyday I get to learn about awesome companies that make/sell really cool stuff… Like these beer brewing books. The company, “More Flavor!” sells items to help people brew their own beer, make their own wine and roast their own coffee. How cool, right!?!

Earlier that day I met with an owner who makes coffee that helps you burn fat… WHAT!?!? I’m sorry… but when it comes to coffee, this girl needs her half & half, sugar and everything in between… Nothing about my coffee is fat burning. But still a cool idea!!

I also get to eat with my managers at Panera. Have you tried their green tea? It’s amazing. I forgot how much I loved it until today.

After work I had great intentions of going to CrossFit, but those were shattered when I thought of making coconut chicken for dinner.

And even more so when I decided to venture out to find Sunflower Market in San Jose.

Welp…. I found it!

20120808-200909.jpg

And they totally have shredded coconut…win!

20120808-200924.jpg

CrossFit dreams were also shattered by the thought that I NEED to find better work shoes… the tootsies are KILLING me. And yes the caps are completely necessary. Try walking around outside, all day in heels… sore feet much?

20120808-200932.jpg

I tried on five pairs. Of course I chose the Michael Kors. I asked the sales girl, “Now are you sure these are real leather?” Her response… “Um, they’re Michael Kors.” Enough said.

20120808-200943.jpg

They weren’t crazy expensive, but they were crazy comfortable. Sometimes you just gotta spend a little more for better quality. I’m hoping that these will be my “every day” shoes. One of my managers told me that she gets one pair, breaks them in and then just wears them every day… we’ll see how that goes. I’m not really a fan of wearing the same pair of shoes every single day. But I’m going to try it. If it means happy feet, then I’m a happer girl.

Never put pop chips on the top of your grocery bag. And never put the grocery bag in the passenger seat on the way home at 7pm. You’re bound to eat the entire bag.

20120808-200952.jpg

Not only were my CrossFit dreams shattered, but so were my coconut chicken dreams. Pop chips and new shoes won tonight.

20120808-200957.jpg

That’s okay. There’s always room for a glass of wine and feet propped up in this house.

20120808-201002.jpg

Plus, yesterday’s workout was ridiculously hard… We’re talking almost 40 minutes. In the land of CrossFit, that’s like a full-blown marathon.

  • 5 Rounds:
  1. 5 deadlifts (155lbs)
  2. 1 minute plank
  3. 50 double unders
  4. 20 wall balls (14lbs)
  5. run to trail head (400m)

End result: my calves are killing me!!!

4th Festivities

How was your 4th of July!?! Watch any fireworks? Attend a BBQ?? I did!!

20120705-133957.jpg

To start the day off right, Justin and I went to Awful Annie’s for breakfast with his Momma and John. As soon as we told them where we were going, it didn’t take much to convince them to join!

I love catching up and hanging out with them. I had the mini breakfast: egg/bacon/cheese scramble with fruit and toast. Delish! I love their blackberry jam.

Next stop, my parents! Right away, I was craving some “seasonal ale” — Apricot Ale hit the spot!

20120705-134019.jpg

We spent most of the day hanging out by the pool and just being a family.

20120705-134024.jpg

Dad barbecued up some amazing steak and chicken. I helped myself to a small plate of everything.

20120705-134033.jpg

And later I got to see this beautiful face!! NADINE! I was stoked that she was even MORE festive than me!?!

20120705-134053.jpg

She arrived with the perfect gift… Army print go-girl and a “Her Wineness” sign for my apartment. Aw. She knows me oh too well.

20120705-134102.jpg

I had a blast hanging out with this miniature person. Who, by the way, LOVES horses. You ask her, “Want to go feed Comet!?” She runs to her room and grabs her shoes and points to the door. You don’t have to ask her twice.

20120705-134107.jpg

MommaG got her this rocking horse. She’ll jump up and down, rock back and forth on it – all day long. Love it. And check out her ridiculously cute outfit. Too much cuteness!

After a full day of swimming and golfing, these two were wiped out!

20120705-134116.jpg

But… no time for sleeping, it’s fair time!!

20120705-134123.jpg

With the whole family!

20120705-134132.jpg

We brought our beers to go and snacked on bratwurst’s and kettle corn.

20120705-134139.jpg

And stumbled upon dirt bike racing. At first I though, “how boring… they just drive around in circles!!?”

20120705-134147.jpg

And then I saw these little guys… I’m a sucker for anything miniature. Dirt bike riders are no exception. They were probably all about 4-7 years old.

20120705-134155.jpg

After the fair and some intense people watching, we hung out and ‘tailgated’ to wait for it to get dark so we could watch the fireworks.

Let’s talk about this people watching… I’m floored at the clothing “choices” that people “select” to “wear.” Many quotations to emphasize the sarcasm here. Another words, what the F*%$ are they thinking!?!? I was told several times, “Hayley — stop staring.” I couldn’t believe my eyes. There were many moments of gratitude. We’ll just leave it at that.

20120705-134200.jpg

The fireworks were lovely. But I was pooped by the end of the night.

Today I was able to ride my horse and pack for my Army week of training.

20120705-134209.jpg

Hanging out with all the “kids” — and eating leftovers.

Tonight is jet ski’s and country night!

Days Like These

Do you ever look at something you have and think to yourself, “Man… I still REALLY love ______.” –?

I had that thought about my car the other day.

20120518-141204.jpg

I was driving around, doing some errands. I got to a stop light and decided it was perfect “top down” weather. I quickly pushed the button — just in time to drive off as soon as the light turned green. And then as I was driving, I thought… I literally have every little girl’s dream car. Why would I want a new car when I have a perfectly great, no-payment, GOOD, car!?!

And then… I no longer wanted a new car. I came home and washed it. Because I love the things that I already have.

I often find myself wishing/wanting the next best thing. The “new” Lululemon tank top. Or the “new” Nike shoes. Or the “new” Michael Khors bag… it’s absolute madness! As May comes to an end (kinda)… and June begins, I’m going to name June “appreciation month.” I want to focus on the “stuff” I already have and appreciate what I have… With that, no shopping. No “new” must haves.

After washing my girly car, I made a girly lunch:

20120518-141209.jpg

Grilled turkey burger on top of mixed greens, mushrooms, goat cheese, strawberries and goddess dressing.

Friday night my Mom and I found ourselves sharing a cheese plate… at Carpe Vino.

20120520-135311.jpg

Somehow I’ve managed to find amazing wine bars in every town that I’m in. This one is in Auburn, my parents home town. The atmosphere is perfect with a side of country. It’s a mix of young and old with a fabulous selection of wine and food. I’ve only ever gotten their “bar food” — because I focus on the wine, of course. They even serve truffle popcorn!

Mom and I split a bottle and then J came and met us there. We then proceeded to share a few more glasses…

That night I also got a call from work. Turns out I start on Monday and not in a few weeks. I’m slightly bummed about this only because I was enjoying the relaxation time. But, it will be nice to start making money again. So I can afford purchases like beer towers.

20120520-135325.jpg

Cause that’s normal and everything.

Saturday night I hung out with Danger. We did a pub crawl down town. We did less crawling and more pubbing if you know what I mean.

20120520-135332.jpg

And my good friend Danielle from college came out. So good to see her! Her and the boyfriend were so happy for me about my job and were instantly offering my contacts of friends in the area. I really have the best friends.

I’m super behind on blogs, but that was part of my weekend. To be continued…

Counting My Lasts

Last weekend I was talking to my family about my Arizona life. Courtney told me that I’ve done an amazing job of making poop sparkle. The rest agreed. Geee… thanks.

I hadn’t thought of it that way until then. But they’re right. And I’m pretty proud of myself. I’ve been able to turn a some-what (actually, very) crappy situation into a good time. Overall I’ve had a blast here. I’ve been able to explore several cities. Take a few trips home and to San Diego. I’ve met new friends. Bought some awesome stuff/clothes. Learned how to adjust my fitness goals. And practiced writing.

As my time here comes to an end, I’m starting to count my “lasts”…

1. My last box of Keurig k-pots

20120418-110859.jpg

During one of my first weekend Costco trips, I decided that in order to ensure happiness at BOLC — I NEEDED a Kuerig. I was concerned about dropping so much money on a coffee maker. But decided it was worth it because it ensured flawless coffee for the next 4 months. And oh my gosh, I was right on the money with this one.

20120418-110908.jpg

I love my Keurig and I totally support spending money on good, FAST coffee — the kind that doesn’t involve driving to and waiting in a line to pay $4 for… ahem, Starbucks. I can make it hot or iced. I can pick the size/strength. I can make tea. And all I have to do is push a few buttons. No grinds or crazy cleaning hassles to deal with. I love it. And the 60 k-pots that came with it was pretty much the exact amount that I needed. If it could brew beer, I’d probably marry it. The only problem is that I’m going to have to lug or ship this sucker home! I can see it now… To the southwest customer service: “Please be careful with that suitcase, because it has my Keurig in it!”

2. Last few ruck marches

This one I’m not going to miss. I’ve never been a fan of lugging around a bunch of weight on my back. I have a hard time breathing and my legs are short. Enough said. Every time I think about my short legs I instantly think of my Dad. He thinks this attribute of mine is very comical considering he’s the one who gave them to me. Thanks a lot, stubs!

Also, rucking a backpack instead of a ruck is not normal. Nor is in comfortable or logical. And 2ish miles really doesn’t deliver any fitness benefits. Therefore, Wednesday morning is a wash. I only have one more and I’m not sad to see them go.

This morning was one of those legendary ruck marches. I kept moving my legs. And with every step I thought, “I only have to do this one more time.”

3. Last few weekends

I only have two of them left. It’s bitter sweet. My weekends here have been my Heaven. I look forward to them and put a lot of thought and planning into them. I usually spend them alone which is peaceful and enjoyable for someone who spends most of her weekdays surrounded by people and constant talking.

This weekend I only get one day due to my dreaded staff duty. I asked Stephanie to join me in a Tucson day trip. I’m looking forward to enjoying Tucson for one last (maybe) time before I jet back home. There will be running, pedicures, lunch, grocery shopping and exploring involved… all key ingredients to an Army Paisley weekend.

4. Last few “I love you, Auntie” picture text messages from MommaG

20120418-110915.jpg

Every Wednesday my Mom watches Kenzlee and I get to join in on the fun through pictures. They usually involve two amazing things: my niece and my horse.

I’m looking forward to being able to physically join the fun. But they are definitely a sparkle in my week. 🙂

Tonight:

I planned on going grocery shopping, again. I made the list and planned it all out. I only have one egg left and no greek yogurt. Translated, that means breakfast is kind of non-existent. I live for breakfast so this is a problem.

I was cruising around and found this recipe and decided that I really didn’t want to get in my car after all. And I have “enough” of the ingredients to get by one more day.

And then I saw this in my refrigerator:

There’s only 2 left. And since I’m in the spirit of counting my lasts, I decided to celebrate. Celebrate what? Counting my lasts, duh.

And then grocery shopping was canceled.

Thanks to Jillian Michaels, I can barely walk. James told me that I was walking as if I needed to go to the bathroom — except in slightly more visual terms. Sore on so many levels it’s embarrassing.

Jillian Michaels kicked my ass. And I’m a CrossFitter (ex-CrossFitter these days). And I’m well aware of how this makes me look: lame.

So I grabbed the beer, put my PJ’s on, bought a new book on my Kindle and I’m calling it a night.

Although this chapter at BOLC is ending, I’m happy to say goodbye. I’ll miss the gorgeous Arizona mountains. I’ll miss my rental car. And I’ll miss my weekend get-away’s. But that’s the way things go. All good (and bad) things must come to an end.

As I count my “last’s,” I’m keeping a positive outlook. I feel that I was blessed with the opportunity to become an intel officer. And I feel happy that I was able to train in Arizona over the winter. As many bad things have happened within my class (mostly frustrations), I’m thankful for the opportunity and the experiences.

And… Jillian Michaels, I’ll be back at it tomorrow, but for now…thank goodness for ibuprofen.
