Shark Weekend

A day in the life of Army Paisley… Civilian style:

My days immediately start with a shower and then a big breakfast.

20120813-183507.jpg

This particular morning I couldn’t make up my mind between salmon and almond butter… so I had both. I also have a cup of coffee. I never finish it, but it’s next to me while I’m getting ready.

I be-bop to music while I put my make up on. I set two alarms for after I’m already awake. One for 7:45am as a reminder “you have 15 minutes before you need to leave the house.” And then another at 8:00am “You need to leave, like NOW!” It ensures that I get to work in time. There have been so many mornings when I look at the clock and think, “CRAP! I’m already 5 minutes late to work!!! AHHH!!” I hate those mornings so I choose not to re-live them.

Then I get to work by about 8:15am. Check my email, chat with my co-workers and then dive into my plan for the day.

These days my plan in literally all mapped out for me…

20120813-183513.jpg

At some point I stop for lunch. Rarely do I eat out, unless I’m riding with a manager. So I bring my own lunch. It’s usually something really simple that I threw together that morning. This day was mixed lettuce with lunch meat, leftover chicken and goddess dressing.

20120813-183525.jpg

I also stop for a drink around 3pm. My typical choice is a Starbucks tea, but this day it was a cherry limeade slurpee. I’m not usually a slurpee fan, but I made a big exception for this glorious flavor!

20120813-183532.jpg

Later I’ll snack on something before heading back to the office around 4pm. Strawberries or coconut flakes or zuchinni or trail mix.

20120813-183543.jpg

And on the days that I’m struggling… a cake pop and iced coconut coffee will do the trick!

20120813-183551.jpg

Between 5:30 and 6:30 I leave the office and head straight to CrossFit. I change at the gym and hang out with my “box friends” until class starts. Or I catch up on blog reading, facebook or phone calls.

By 8pm I’m on my way home to make dinner, shower and go to bed.

But on Friday nights… It’s a little different…

Last Friday I finally made it out for the night.

20120813-183607.jpg

I met up with my “box friends” at Rock Bottom… a brewery in Campbell with delicious beers!

20120813-183620.jpg

I had two of the White Ale’s. Yum!

Saturday

Justin and I made a day trip to Monterey, CA. It was pretty toasty here in San Jose… so the sub 60 degree weather by the water was perfection!

20120813-183629.jpg

I sported BOTH sweaters. I’m kind of a wuss.

20120813-183640.jpg

20120813-183647.jpg

Of course we found ourselves at the Monterey wine tasting room.

20120813-183653.jpg

I was impressed by everything at “A Taste of Monterey” EXCEPT for their wine. No thanks… I’ll just pay for the tasting. No bottle or glass for you two? No, just the tasting, thanks. Blah. Call me a wine snob. I don’t care.

20120813-183711.jpg

But the view at the tasting bar was spectacular! Yes please!

20120813-183718.jpg

20120813-183725.jpg

Justin and I took a very long time deciding if we wanted to spend the $35 each to go to the Aquarium. I knew that if I didn’t go, I would have been disappointed. So we spent the money. Would I have done it again? No. But I would have regretted it had I chosen to pass.

20120813-183801.jpg

No doubt, the display was amazing. Just a little too many people for my viewing pleasure… if you know what I mean.

20120813-183809.jpg

The sharks… so cool!! My favorite was the hammerhead!!

20120813-183829.jpg

I love all the schools of fish swimming together. It always looks fake to me. Like they’re in a trance or something.

20120813-183837.jpg

And uh, giant turtles!?! Hello adorable!

20120813-183845.jpg

It was so much fun. But simply hanging out with Justin was the most fun.

20120813-183854.jpg

For the fellow long distance-ers out there… I feel your pain.

But thank God for the weekend. Cheers.

Wine Lately

20120802-070803.jpg

Hi guys!! I’m going to have to do some SERIOUS catching up…

So last weekend, not the one we just had (I know), but the one before… it was my birthday!!

I spent it with two of my favorite people: Justing and Nadine.

20120802-070816.jpg

We went wine tasting!!

20120802-070836.jpg

I joined two wine clubs. I know, livin’ large… right! And it was absolutely perfect. I won’t have to buy wine for a few months now. Wine for dinner? You got it!

Justin made me these ridiculously cute wine glasses for my birthday with my initials on them. I left them at his house… but I’ll show them to you soon. He’s so creative.

Monday after work my mom and dad took me out to dinner at my favorite Sacramento spot… Paesano’s!!

20120802-070844.jpg

We split a pitcher of sangria, bruchetta and pizza. Yum! I was happy to see them.

Historically I’m usually away at training for the Army on my birthday. This was the first birthday in four years that I was in California. Thank goodness!!

And then Monday morning it was back to work!

20120802-070849.jpg

I’m ok with that. I posted a few birthday cards at my office. That one talks to me. It tells me that drinking three gallons of wine is perfectly normal. It’s my favorite card, obviously.

20120802-070854.jpg

Eats Lately…

I’ve been obsessed with smoked salmon on top of cream cheese and toast. Holy delicious! It’s a perfect combo of protein and carbs for breakfast.

20120802-070905.jpg

I also snagged a bag of chia seeds at TJ’s… I’ve yet to find something that I really like that involves these weird little seeds… but we’re getting there. I’m thinking almond butter, banana wrap with some chia sprinkled in there… we’ll see.

20120802-070910.jpg

I’m also back on a vitamin kick. These are the GNC Active Women’s vitamins. For whatever reason they keep me from feeling hungry all. day. long. HUGE fan… I can only take a few at a time and typcially forget to take them all by the end of the day. But I’m getting better. I know that vitamins are really important to take… so we’re getting there.

20120802-070915.jpg

CrossFit…

Since I barely have time to eat, I’ve only been doing CrossFit lately. I pack my gym bag every night and then head straight to the gym after work. I usually make it to the 7pm class which I’m thankful that my gym offers. Otherwise I’d be out of luck on the workout end. Todays workout was a toughie (when isn’t it?):

4 Rounds:

  • 20 ball slams (16 lb ball)
  • 20 crunches with the ball
  • 20 diamond push ups on the ball
  • run to the fence and back, with the ball

I finished in 14ish minutes. I’m getting back into the swing of things with CrossFit. It feels great to be back. The push ups were the hardest part for me. I had to break them up in sets of 5 to get them all done. And even go on my knees — yikes!! But my arms were still screaming despite my “modification”.

When I got home I cooked up a chicken apple sausage, protein shake and a large glass of wine.

Floors are mopped and vacuumed, counters are clean and sanitized… Now it’s time for some Grey’s Anatomy.

How was your weekend? Done any killer workouts lately? Ever get on cleaning sprees late at night?

San Jose Refresh

Ever had one of those days where you just feel like pouting?

Maybe you shattered your brand new phone?

20120630-203842.jpg

And then you went to go see if you could get it fixed… and learned that it would cost you another $200, minimum.

And then things start to turn around…

Boyfriend tells you that he might be able to fix your screen for $28.66.

Instead of wallowing in my frustration, I put on my walking shoes. (And a VERY colorful ensemble.)

20120630-203928.jpg

While on this walk, I started thinking…

20120630-203900.jpg

Because that’s what people do on walks: think. I really do love San Jose. I do. And I got to thinking of all the great things about living in the bay area.

Bay Area Greatness:

  1. The landscape is beautiful. There are so many trees, green grass and TONS of flowers. Just walking around my neighborhood is gorgeous.
  2. Amazing running territory. There are so many places to run — places that I’ve yet to explore.
  3. San Jose is only 30 minutes from the beach. Enough said.
  4. Beautiful people. Tons of fun restaurants and bars filled with young professionals. I like pretty scenery.
  5. Not too far from my family. I can drive home (parents house) if I need to. But far enough to be “away.”
20120701-071722.jpg
When I got home from my walk, I was feeling happy, energetic and ready to cook something!
A few weeks ago I bought a tub of Trader Joe’s Chicken Curry Salad. It was delicious. I put it on salads and had to pry myself away from eating the entire tub in one sitting. Last night I went on a hunt for a similar recipe, this is what I found:

20120630-203935.jpg

It was delicious. I did my own rendition, of course.

20120630-203947.jpg

MY Chicken Salad:

  1. Dump drained chicken in with mayo, TONS of curry, garlic powder and pepper.
  2. Add big scoop of almond butter.
  3. Throw in a 1/2 cup of trail mix.
  4. Mix, enjoy!
With all this fresh air, I was inspired to do some cleaning too…

20120630-203941.jpg

Okay, maybe not cleaning, but definitely soaking. This silver/grey wristlet is great, but gets SUPER dirty, fast. A little dish soap and elbow grease should do the trick!

Later, I whipped up a very, very green smoothie.

20120630-203952.jpg

In the mix: coconut water, coconut milk, frozen kale, frozen banana and vanilla. Cold and refreshing — hit the spot!

I went to bed feeling happy and refreshed. All it took was a walk and a self pep talk. It’s amazing… all those studies done by doctors — well, they actually know what they’re talking about! Fresh air and exercise is the perfect medicine for the mind.

Have you ever had a day where exercise made all the difference? Was it just a funky mood?

I know that exercise makes me feel better, yet sometimes the hardest part is simply putting on my running shorts!

Writing, Planning, Running

Hey guys!! How was your weekend?? Mine was great! To help start your weekend with a ‘feel good’ story, read about Jenna’s book signing.

I dream of one day writing a book. I was borderline tears reading through her post. It’s exciting to read about other’s success.

On to another kind of success… I’ve been planning for marathon training! It quickly snuck up on me… Nike Women’s Marathon is October 14th!! So exciting! Today I bought a whiteboard calendar in order to help me map out all my runs. I used Tina’s marathon training guide. I’m trying something different than I used to use for my half marathons. We’ll see how it goes. But I like that it’s less running which will allow for more CrossFit.

When I first start planning a training program, I have to physically write it all down in my paper planner.
image

After that I add it to my google calendar. That way the reminders will pop up on my phone. For this training, I asked Justin to join me on his bike for the longer runs. I think it will help to have a buddy… Besides carrying my water and Gu for me. 😉

With all this planning and training, I’m starting to clean up my eats!

Last Night:

I did a fridge/pantry sweep and chopped up the rest of the sweet potatoes and threw them in the oven.

image

With some Coconut Oil, garlic and pepper. Oh how I’ve MISSED coconut oil!!!

image

I also used the can of Mole that I had bought back in Arizona — and made a pot of Chicken Mole. Holy-Mole-YUM.

image

The Mole remained un-used because I could never get the darn top off!! I got too frustrated and just stabbed it. A little aggressive… but hey, it worked, right??

image

After my “Run 5 Miles” calendar alarm went off… I decided to put it in gear. And I ran the full 5. I think I might just be getting over this non-running rut I’ve been in.

And then the green smoothie was born….

image

Frozen banana, frozen kale, coconut milk, ground flax seed and protein powder.

I spent the rest of the evening enjoying a few episodes of Grey’s anatomy, laundry, foam rolling and a glass of Riesling.

image

What races do you have planned this summer?

I’m doing the NWM, but thinking of adding another 1/2 Marathon into the mix.

Saturday Surprise

Yesterday I woke up to a case of the “I don’t wanna go to work”‘s … You know. The no-make up, casual clothes wearing kind of day. And so that’s what I did.

Lunch:

I got lucky because the kitchen at work had just been stocked when I got there. Spoiled, I know.

image

And a Sub… Turkey/bacon/avocado. Omg, yes. Oh and those are definitely TOMS… told ya it was a casual day.

image

While at work I was surprised by the news… J said he’d come hang out for the night!! I already had plans with my Aunt to go to Dancing on the Avenue in Willow Glen — So we all went!

This is Justin staring at cooking meat. Grilling, smoking, BBQing meat. We’re so soul mates.

image

Walk away from the food…

image

Dancing on the Avenue was a blast. It was pretty much a bunch of people eating, drinking and dancing. I don’t know about you guys, but that’s a perfect Saturday afternoon in my book. As time goes by, I’m becoming more and more in love with my new city. I love that there always seems to be something fun like this to do. I learned that they have music in the park every Thursday night. My aunt said you can bring your own food and wine… I’m so in.

image

Speaking of wine…

I often try and buy new-to-me, inexpensive wines. I’ll buy a few at a time and then it’s like a wine tasting at home! I’ve found some really great, affordable wines this way. My mom calls us “label girls” because the cutest label wins!!

A few weeks ago I snagged a bottle of Liberte Cab. I opened it the other night when Jacqueline and I were decorating the apartment. We were both surprisingly pleased with it. It was a very smooth red. A little fruity, yet dark…. Just the way I like em’. hehe You can read a full review of it here.

Hope you all have an amazing Sunday. Snag a bottle of Liberte from Trader Joe’s — you won’t be disappointed!

Good Stuff

I love writing the Things I Love posts… but some of these things aren’t products. It’s just GOOD stuff. Stuff that happens in my life that doesn’t always find a spot in the blog. But definitely deserves one.

– Baby ducks. I spotted these guys on my way to breakfast the other day. So stinkin’ cute.

image

– Mexican ceaser salad. Never knew it existed…

image

– Copious amounts of honey dew. And I mean copious. This time I added some fro-yo to the top. I love that my work gives free food — which includes frozen yogurt.

image

– Chocolate mint water. I waited a very long time before I tried this stuff. But oh em geeee!!! It’s so amazing. It’s literally like drinking chocolate. I usually drink 3 every day I work. Chocolate wasted, anyone? ha…Oh and those shoes in the background. I finally got them fixed at the shoe repair store (there’s one right by my house)… and I’m probably going to wear them every day for a week. I’ve missed them. It’s like getting a new pair of shoes!

image

– Sitting outside at work on sunny days. The weather is so perfect. And I work in such a beautiful area. I’m a lucky girl.

image

– My new phone. And looking at that picture every time I use my phone. (Check out the weather… jealous??) hehe

image

– This guy. Many of you know me personally. With that, many of you know the history of Jay and I. Here’s the skinny… Girl meets boy at age 15. Girl and boy fall in love. Girl and boy fight like the Notebook. Girl and boy can’t stop loving each other. Girl and boy give up fighting. 7 years later… Girl and boy are happy.

What are you loving these days?

Giant Dipper

On Monday night, Justin arrived at my apartment. We quickly headed to Trader Joe’s for all the ingredients for these: Cherry Mojito’s.

image

Jacqueline accepted a drink as well. It was agreed, we’re definitely cherry-mojito fans.

I also made an easy dinner of sweet potato wedges and GF panini’s.

image

Can you tell I love my grill??

After dinner, and a few more Mojito’s… Sean, Jacqueline, Justin and I played a game…

image

I honestly can’t remember what it’s called. But here’s the basics: a “fill in the blank” (kind of like MadLibs) is put down. Each player puts a card face down that they think corresponds with the black “fill in the blank” card. The person, or judge then gets to flip over each card and decide which answer they like best. Whoever the card belongs to, they get the black card for that round. The one with the most black cards at the end of the game wins!

I didn’t think I was very funny at first, but soon got the hang of it. At some points I was laughing so hard that I was crying. It was an amazing Monday night. I’d say the first “roomie” night ever!! 🙂

The next morning Jay and I headed to Santa Cruz. We spent a few hours on the beach. We wanted to stay far away from the boardwalk… but couldn’t resist any longer.

image

We found ourselves in a long line filled with excited high schoolers. I LOVE the Giant Dipper. I could ride it over and over again. I don’t know if the ride itself is the fun part… but I think it’s a mixture of all the Santa Cruz memories and great times that I’ve had there.

This day was no different.

image

And away we went!! WEEEE!

image

After the beach we went to CrossFit West Santa Cruz. I’ve been to that gym before, so I was excited to go back. Jay was stoked because it has this huge fake grass strip in the middle. It’s literally the “Disneyland” of CrossFit gyms.

We loved the gym and coaches both so much that we even bought their T-shirts! I’m not biased towards any CrossFit gyms… except for my home CrossFit Envy. But one of my favorite things to do is go and visit other gyms in different cities and states. I think it’s cool that almost every CrossFit gym has the same look and feel. Working out is only a small portion of CrossFit culture.

I’m especially fond of CrossFit West because while I was there on Tuesday, I learned that I didn’t actually lose my pull ups. They had AMAZING pull up bars (aka: the kind for small grip girls like me). I hopped right on and knocked out about 10. I jumped off and turned to Justin, “DID YOU SEE THAT!?!?!”

About a week ago I was really sad with myself because I couldn’t do pull ups at CF Campbell. Being that I took some time off from CrossFit, I immediately attributed this to a loss of strength. Although some of that is true, turns out it was a bar issue. I’m used to a smaller bar!

I’ve found a home at CrossFit Campbell here in San Jose. They don’t have the pull up bars that I’m used to — so my goal is to master pull ups at the big boy bars too. This whole idea proves my point that pull ups are a technique issue, not always a strength thing.

After CrossFit, Justin and I headed back to the apartment to wash off all the sand and sweat. And headed to dinner…

image

Wednesday morning it was back to work for the two of us. Bummer. But we had a great few days. I’m really starting to love the bay area. ESPECIALLY this 70 degree weather. I’ll take that all summer, yes please!

Stability Ball = Amazeballz

Ever heard of using a stability/yoga ball as a desk chair? Livestrong talks about it here.

They even did some studies at a few schools by replacing chairs with a stability ball.

Well…. IT’S AWESOME!!

The last two days at work I’ve been sitting on a ball instead of a chair. At any point during the day, you can find me bouncing or doing ab crunches on the stability ball. Where did I find it? Aimlessly wandering the conference room at work. Towards the end of the day my lower back started hurting. Turns out you’re supposed to “gradually” ease into this ball/chair shenanigans. Oopsie. I’ll take a break from it tomorrow.

Speaking of… Fitnessista gives a very thorough post on all the different exercises you can do on a stability ball. (Most are not work-appropriate, if you know what I mean…) All are great at the gym or in your house for a quick at-home workout.

All this stability ball craziness was getting me pumped up for my yoga class last night at Willow Glen Yoga!! I went to the 5:00pm class. After researching local yoga studios, I felt that WGY was one of the best reviewed. Lately I’ve been relying on yelp reviews. I don’t always listen to them, but they’re a huge help when you’re BRAND new to a city (–except for the fact that I was born here, nbd). Sometimes people get on there and just rip a business to shreds. I think it’s their way of getting back at the company over ONE bad experience…  I try and read the positives and see if what that person liked jives with what I’m looking for.

As for WGY, all the positives jived with everything I was looking for in a yoga studio… plus it’s close to my house!

The “Level 2 Vinyassa” class was exactly what I needed. It was lots of leg stretching and tons of flow. I’m definitely a fan.

Before yoga, I swung by TJ’s to grab some ingredients for a few Ella-inspired recipes. I love her blog because she’s always coming up with deliciously-healthy-looking recipes. Her blog has been one of the primary reasons I’ve been missing a fully-stocked kitchen, as well as this blog. Well, up for trial is her PB ella bars.

I’m a huge fan of Larabars, so her ella-bars were a no-brainer. They’ll be great for grab-n-go.

image

The bars are currently waiting for me in my refrigerator. But I can tell you right now, the batter was amaaaaaaaazing.

I also made a batch of gluten-free banana muffins. And dinner. It was a cooking kind of night.

Today Justin is coming for a visit. SQUEEE!! We’ll probably do a repeat of the last visit. With some added CrossFit time.

Hope you all have an amazing week!

My Monday

Yesterday was a day of firsts for me. I cooked a real meal in my apartment. A REAL MEAL!

There was no microwaving involved, no teeny hotel counters, and no crock pot mess. It was bliss. While I was living in AZ, I longed for a real kitchen. With real cooking utensils and SPACE. I was always balancing bowls of food (and spilling them) while trying to come up with meals that only involved a crock pot or microwave. I finally have that and I couldn’t be happier about it.

Last night after CrossFit I headed to TJ’s. I tried picking a recipe on the way, but decided to wing it once I got there. While cooking I snacked on veggies and hummus. I’m in love with the 3 layer humus dip. Perfect flavor/spice combo.

image

I had a tough choice: to top a panini with roasted peppers or sun dried tomatoes. The tomatoes won.

image

Adding to yesterday’s firsts… I got to use my new grill! Mom and Dad got it for me as a house warming gift. They knew I’d use it all the time because I used theirs almost every day while I was staying with them. I’m already in love with it. THANKS MOM & DAD!!!

image

Hence my delicious dinner. Turkey, GF bread, cheese, green and sun dried tomato panini with a grilled portabello and 1/2 avocado. I love this grill because it comes with a panini ribbed style plates or smooth griddle style. I set the temperature depending on what I’m cooking. I can even cook raw chicken. At my parents, the veggie burger was a popular one for me. Dad likes to buy those things in bulk… Costco.

I bought a box of Chili Chicken burgers from TJ’s as well as some brats… I think Justin will be appreciative when he comes to visit on Monday.

image

While I’ve been unpacking, I have been finding long lost goodies… like my iPod shuffle! Although I can’t listen to any internet radio — it’s nice and light to run with. I have been debating selling my iPhone. But now I think I’m just going to go for it… the shuffle is so easy to clip on my clothes.

image

Unfortunately due to my work schedule, Friday night is my Monday night. So I took my happy butt to bed early with a glass of Riesling and Grey’s Anatomy. Super crazy, right!?!

This morning, as I was backing out of my garage, my neighbors were still drinking beer on their patio. Nice. They raised their glasses at me and they all laughed. When your neighbors are still partying when you leave for work — you know you work too early. haha. Part of me wished I was them, but a larger part of me was glad that I’m not.

Spinning from a coffee overdose is intense enough without the hang over too.

I know this schedule won’t last forever. And for that I am thankful. But for now… Friday is the new Monday.

So, Happy Tuesday, friends! 🙂

Supportive

Yesterday, Dianna and I finally found the time to get together for coffee. By 10:00, I couldn’t wait any longer… and had to snag an iced coffee and bran muffin.

20120523-092311.jpg

This coffee cup she got me was VERY fitting.

20120523-092431.jpg

I felt like I was intruding on the mommy-n-me day at Peet’s though. Seriously, I’ve never seen so many children in a coffee shop in my entire life. None of them ran into me, or hit me, so it was a good time.

In true Dianna fashion, she got me a big goodie bag filled with all work-related items. These sticky notes are my favorite!

20120523-092420.jpg

And I LOVE that everyone knows of my bird/owl obsession. Most of you have seen my bird tattoo, but I also love owls because they are the Chi Omega symbol. And they’re stinkin’ cute!!

20120523-092425.jpg

I’m thankful for my friendship with Dianna. I’m glad that no matter what, I always fit into her “season” of life. Married, babies, hard times, good time, busy times… isn’t that the point of being friends? Fitting each other into LIFE… because they’re important to you? Am I alone on an island here?

We also took a stroll down to Anthropologie. Dianna bought the same candle that I got my mom for Mother’s Day. Why yes, I DO have great taste!

I spent the rest of the day with my brother. Unfortunately no pictures were taken. We snagged his golf clubs from storage and rocked out to Rack City with the beetle top down. Perfect Tuesday?

Whey Jay-Bob got off work, we headed to the local driving range… Instead of doing what we planned… driving, we played a game of snag golf.

20120523-092326.jpg

It’s a mix of mini golfing and regular golfing. AKA: a really good time. The clubs are giant. And you hit a golf-ball-replica tennis ball. It’s supposed to help your game at golf… Jay said that it was pretty hard, so I’m assuming that was the case. Don’t judge my perfect golfing form. I know I’m going pro any day now.

20120523-092332.jpg

I on the other hand, had a blast no matter what… Improve my golf game? Eh… “Snag Golf” includes the word “golf” — therefore, I’m a HAPPY camper!

20120523-092339.jpg

Jay’s perfect form…

20120523-092353.jpg

20120523-092348.jpg

And the balls are velcro so they “STICK” to the yellow things when you make a shot.

20120523-092359.jpg

After a game of snag golf, we ran 3.5 miles all around Newcastle. We almost got eaten by several dogs AND hit by idiotic drivers who think it’s a good idea to SPEED UP when passing runners. But we made it home — alive.

Dinner at the local italian restaurant: Tre Pazzi Trattoria. They close at 9pm and were more than happy to accomodate us — even though we got there at 9!!

20120523-092404.jpg

Red for him, white for me.

20120523-092410.jpg

We split the tortellini and chicken.

20120523-092415.jpg

I’m never disappointed when I eat there. The servers are always personable, helpful and kind. And the food is out of this world!

My work schedule was changed. WOOOOO!!!! So… now I’ll be attending the infamous “Houseboats 2012” with this cray-cray:

20120523-092447.jpg

Today is nike workouts, laundry and copious amounts of Grey’s Anatomy. Duh.

20120523-092436.jpg

Happy Hump-Day!

XOXO
